Press Release

Date: June 9, 2009
Location: Washington, DC

Today, Congressman Michael E. McMahon voted in favor of H.R. 2751, Consumer Assistance to Recycle and Save Act. The bipartisan legislation, known as "Cash for Clunkers, " will allow consumers to trade in their old cars for vouchers worth up to $4,500 to help pay for new, more fuel-efficient vehicles. It is estimated that H.R. 2751 will spur the sale of up to one million more fuel-efficient cars and trucks, while stimulating the ailing auto industry and reducing our dependence on foreign oil.

"Cash for Clunkers is a win-win," said Rep. McMahon. "It aids both our consumers and our automobile dealerships by promoting clean energy, cutting down on pollution, helping save jobs in the automobile industry and reducing our gas consumption which in turn will save money for our drivers. I urge all who have vehicles eligible for the program to take advantage of this opportunity."

"I think that this legislation is a step in the right direction by Congress. It promotes fuel-efficient vehicles while also promoting new vehicle sales," said Steven Villamarin, of Villa Marin Automobile Dealerships on Staten Island.

Under this legislation, new cars and trucks are into four categories. Miles per gallon figures below refer to EPA "window sticker" values.
